The Beach Boys
Sunday 10th September 1989
The Point Depot

Although the Beach Boys were once a cutting edge musical force, by the eighties the only thing I knew of them was my parent's two greatest hits albums with matching ass shot covers. This kind of tasteful representation, combined with the removal of all but the "poppiest" songs from their repertoire, left a slightly hollow feel. I listen to Pet Sounds these days and it's a different band, although I still feel that every song is half the length it should be (wanting more is not a criticism).

So the beach boys were on tour, but without Brian Wilson (and I was too young to know who he was). Front row was occupied in the Point and the gig was enjoyed quite a lot. They wore bright happy clothes and sang their songs. They even brought girls along to dance with them. The girls wore bikinis (of course).
